GAINESVILLE, FL – University of Florida Gators guard Walter Clayton Jr. is making headlines not only for his stellar performance on the court, but also for his remarkable balancing act off of it. The senior, who transferred to the University of Florida to be closer to his family, is juggling his final college basketball season with the responsibilities of fatherhood to his young daughter, Leilani, born December 11, 2023.
Clayton, who moved from Iona University to be closer to his family, has taken on the role of primary ball handler for the Gators. Coach Todd Golden praised Clayton’s maturity and toughness, noting the significant challenges of balancing a demanding college athletic career with the demands of a newborn. “It would be a lot for a young man…to have a young baby and welcome a new child into the world,” Golden stated. “It speaks to his maturity and his toughness.”
Clayton’s girlfriend, Tatiyana Burney, whom he’s known since middle school, has been instrumental in supporting him and their daughter. Burney’s supportive role allows Clayton to focus on both basketball and his family, as she expressed on social media, crediting Clayton’s support in allowing her to stay at home with their child. Clayton himself acknowledges the significant impact of fatherhood on his personal growth, stating, “I’m still kind of figuring out the whole father thing…me and Leilani [are] kind of growing together right now.”
The support extends to Clayton’s family, including his parents, who fostered his athletic abilities from a young age. His mother, Cherie, who played softball and basketball in high school, spoke highly of Burney’s role in the family.
As the Gators strive for their first national championship since 2007, Clayton’s story serves as a testament to his dedication, both on and off the court. His journey highlights the remarkable ability to balance personal life and athletic aspirations, inspiring fans and teammates alike.
