**Gurugram, April 6, 2025** – The Haryana State Education Board (HSEB) has reported a dramatic decrease in unfair means cases (UMCs) during the recently concluded Class X and XII examinations. Despite a rocky start with question paper leaks and mass cheating attempts on the first day, the board claims this year’s exams were the “cleanest” in recent years.
Only 599 UMCs were registered this year, a significant drop from 918 in 2024, 1,813 in 2023, and 3,570 in 2022. The number of exam centers cancelled also decreased from 64 in 2022 to just 10 this year.
HSEB Secretary Munish Nagpal attributed the improvement to several stringent measures implemented by the government, including the deployment of 226 flying squads and disciplinary action against 135 individuals, including invigilators and center superintendents. Sixteen First Information Reports were also filed against 74 individuals. The board also appointed 588 observers at sensitive centers and a nodal officer in each district.
However, Nuh district remained a hotspot for cheating, recording 249 UMCs – nearly half the state’s total. Other districts with high UMC numbers included Palwal (62), Charkhi Dadri (39), and Bhiwani (38). In contrast, districts in north Haryana, such as Ambala and Karnal, reported minimal or no cheating incidents.
The exams, which involved over five lakh students across 1,434 centers, began with reports of question paper leaks in English and Mathematics on the first two days, prompting immediate action from authorities. Despite the initial setbacks, the significant reduction in cheating cases indicates the effectiveness of the implemented measures.
