Sat Apr 05 20:10:00 UTC 2025: ## USWNT Faces Brazil with Major Lineup Shakeup After Davidson Injury
**INGLEWOOD, Calif.** – The US Women’s National Team (USWNT) will face Brazil in a pair of friendlies this week with a significantly depleted roster. The team is reeling from the loss of starting center-back Tierna Davidson to a torn ACL, an injury that will sideline her until at least 2025. This setback comes on top of an existing calf injury to fellow starter Naomi Girma.
USWNT coach Emma Hayes acknowledged the challenges, stating that the absences present an opportunity for player development. “Without Naomi Girma, without Tierna Davidson, this is the right time to develop individuals,” Hayes said. She plans to integrate younger players like Tara McKeown and Avery Patterson into the lineup alongside veterans Crystal Dunn and Emily Sonnett.
The team is already missing several key players. Forward Sophia Smith (nee Wilson) is on maternity leave, Mallory Swanson is on personal leave, and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher has retired. Midfielder Rose Lavelle is also injured. The absences represent nearly half of the starting lineup from the team’s gold medal-winning Olympic final victory over Brazil in August.
There is some positive news: forward Trinity Rodman has returned after dealing with chronic back problems. While still managing her injury, Rodman expressed excitement about rejoining the team. Forward Catarina Macario, born in Brazil, will also feature prominently and anticipates an emotional return to her native country.
Hayes anticipates a tough challenge from Brazil, particularly their high-pressure defense. She emphasized the importance of adapting to the game’s flow, referencing the Mike Tyson quote, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” The USWNT will play Brazil on Saturday and again on Tuesday in San Jose.
