**RAMESWARAM, TAMIL NADU –** India has inaugurated its first vertical-lift sea bridge, a modern marvel of engineering replacing a century-old structure in Rameswaram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the New Pamban Bridge on Sunday, connecting Rameswaram Island to the mainland at Mandapam.
The 2.07-kilometer bridge, constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of approximately Rs 550 crore, boasts a 72.5-meter navigational span capable of rising 17 meters in just five minutes, ensuring unimpeded maritime traffic. This innovative design surpasses the capabilities of the original Pamban Bridge, built in 1914, which has been closed due to safety concerns.
The new bridge is designed for a lifespan of 100 years and incorporates cutting-edge technology to minimize maintenance. Features include stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints, and a specialized coating to protect against marine corrosion. It can accommodate trains traveling up to 80 kmph and is built to handle significantly increased rail traffic and heavier loads. The bridge stands three meters higher than its predecessor, providing improved sea clearance.
Its construction employed advanced techniques such as the Auto Launching Method for the lift span girder assembly, developed by Suntech Construction and verified by IIT Madras. Rigorous quality control measures, including PAUT welding checks, ensured structural integrity.
The New Pamban Bridge is drawing comparisons to internationally renowned structures like the Golden Gate Bridge and Tower Bridge due to its modern design and advanced engineering. This significant infrastructure project strengthens connectivity between Rameswaram and the mainland, promising smoother and faster rail transport for the region.
