COLOMBO, SRI LANKA – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an unprecedented ceremonial welcome at Colombo’s Independence Square today, marking the first time such an honor has been bestowed upon a foreign leader. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake greeted PM Modi, who arrived late Friday after attending the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok.

The visit signals a strengthening of India-Sri Lanka relations, particularly given Sri Lanka’s recent economic recovery from a severe crisis. India’s substantial financial assistance of $4.5 billion played a crucial role in this recovery. Today’s meetings are expected to yield approximately ten agreements, including a significant defense cooperation pact—a move that aims to overcome past tensions stemming from the withdrawal of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) three and a half decades ago.

Further collaborations are anticipated in energy, digital domains, and debt restructuring. Two key documents facilitating India’s assistance in debt restructuring and a currency swap agreement are expected to be released publicly following delegation-level talks between PM Modi and President Dissanayake. They will also virtually inaugurate the Sampur solar energy project and dedicate several other India-funded projects in Sri Lanka. Later today, PM Modi will pay tribute at the IPKF memorial.

The Indian High Commissioner to Colombo, Santosh Jha, emphasized the unprecedented scale of India’s assistance to Sri Lanka, highlighting its significance for both nations. The visit underscores India’s commitment to a strong and prosperous partnership with Sri Lanka.
