**Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine** – A Russian ballistic missile strike on a residential area in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, has killed at least 14 people, including six children, and wounded at least 50 more, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attack, one of the deadliest in Russia’s ongoing war this year, struck Zelenskyy’s hometown on Friday, damaging residential buildings and sparking fires.
Graphic videos circulating online show casualties lying on the pavement near a playground, amidst rising smoke. Over 30 people, including a three-month-old baby, were hospitalized following the attack, Dnipropetrovsk Governor Serhiy Lysak reported. Emergency services confirmed the number of wounded is still rising.
Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, stated that a ballistic missile was used, a weapon difficult to intercept without advanced air defenses. He emphasized that the strike targeted purely civilian infrastructure, with no military facilities in the vicinity.
Russia’s Defence Ministry offered a contrasting account, claiming the missile targeted a gathering of Ukrainian servicemen and foreign instructors, resulting in alleged losses of up to 85 personnel and 20 vehicles.
Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling for increased Western pressure on Moscow and highlighting the ongoing attacks as evidence of Russia’s commitment to war. He also reported further drone attacks on Kharkiv, killing four and injuring 35, and a drone strike on a thermal power plant in Kherson, violating a purported US-brokered agreement on energy infrastructure. These attacks follow a series of similar strikes earlier in the week. Later on Friday, Russian drones launched another massive attack on Kryvyi Rih, causing fires in four areas of the city.
The reported US-brokered agreement between Russia and Ukraine to cease targeting each other’s energy infrastructure, announced last week, has been contested by both sides, with accusations of violations from each camp. Ukraine has also claimed to have agreed to a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which Russia subsequently rejected.
