**Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, India** – A rare long-snouted vine snake (Ahaetulla longirostris) has been rediscovered in India, marking only the second recorded sighting in the country. The vibrant green snake was found on March 28th in the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve during a rhino release operation. This is the first time the species has been documented in Uttar Pradesh.
The discovery was made by field biologist Vipin Kapoor Sainy and his team while clearing a termite mound. The species, commonly found in Southeast Asia, was previously only recorded once in Bihar and Odisha in the previous year. After careful handling, the snake was released back into a nearby termite mound.
Dudhwa Tiger Reserve officials celebrated the rediscovery, highlighting the reserve’s ecological richness and the importance of habitat conservation. The discovery underscores the ecological significance of even seemingly small habitats, such as termite mounds, in supporting rare species. The rediscovery paves the way for further research on the species in India.
