**Colombo, Sri Lanka –** Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Colombo on April 4th, 2025, for a weekend visit aimed at bolstering bilateral relations with Sri Lanka. This marks Mr. Modi’s fourth visit to the island nation in the last decade and is the first visit by a foreign leader since the leftist National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, assumed power last year.

President Dissanayake, who visited New Delhi in December 2024, welcomed Mr. Modi with a ceremonial welcome at Colombo’s Independence Square. The two leaders are expected to finalize approximately ten agreements covering defense, energy security, and digitalization.

Mr. Modi’s visit follows his participation in the BIMSTEC summit in Thailand, where he met with regional leaders, including Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. He was greeted at Bandaranaike airport by several top Sri Lankan ministers, including Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa. The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome on social media. He also received a warm welcome from members of the Indian diaspora at his hotel. The visit underscores the growing cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.
