Fri Apr 04 21:50:00 UTC 2025: **Michigan Senator McMorrow Launches Bid for US Senate Seat**

LANSING, MI – State Senator Mallory McMorrow (D) announced her candidacy Wednesday for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in the 2026 election. The 38-year-old is the first prominent Democrat to enter what is expected to be a highly competitive and expensive race.

McMorrow, a rising star in the Democratic Party, has differentiated herself from national party leadership, arguing that a new generation of leaders is needed to counter President Trump’s influence and appeal to a broader electorate. She criticized the current Democratic strategy as lacking urgency and specifically cited Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s vote in favor of a recent Republican spending bill.

Democrats are eager to retain the seat currently held by Senator Gary Peters, who is not seeking re-election. Other potential Democratic candidates include Representative Haley Stevens and Attorney General Dana Nessel, although Representative Hillary Scholten and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have withdrawn from consideration. Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II is instead running for governor.

On the Republican side, former Representative Mike Rogers, who narrowly lost a Senate race in 2024, is anticipated to run.

McMorrow, first elected in 2018, gained national attention in 2022 for a powerful speech refuting accusations from a Republican colleague who falsely linked her support for LGBTQ+ rights to “grooming” children. She has championed legislation on gun control and reproductive rights. The highly competitive race is expected to be a key battleground in the 2026 elections.
