**GUWAHATI, April 5, 2025** – The Indian Institute of Management-Shillong (IIM-S) celebrated its 16th annual convocation on Friday, marking a significant increase in female enrollment. The traditionally matrilineal state of Meghalaya, once perceived as unsafe and remote by potential students, now boasts a 52% female student body at IIM-S, a dramatic shift from its earlier composition.
Director D.P. Goyal attributed this change to the growing respect for women in Meghalaya and the appeal of the northeastern region’s diversity. The relocation to a new, 120-acre permanent campus at Umsawli also played a crucial role. The institute now has students from 28 states across India.
At the convocation, degrees were conferred upon 475 graduating students. IIM-S reported a 100% placement record, ranking fifth among 20 IIMs nationwide, with an average starting salary of ₹26.44 lakh and a highest package of ₹71.5 lakh. Prof. Goyal highlighted the institute’s unique “Campus in Clouds” setting, nestled amidst hills and forests.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma addressed the graduates, urging them to view their life journey as a marathon requiring perseverance and commitment. Other speakers included Ashish Modi, president of Honeywell India, and Shishir Kumar Bajoria, chairman of IIM-Shillong’s Board of Governors. The event showcased IIM-Shillong’s growth and success, particularly its progress in achieving gender diversity.
