VIJAYAWADA, April 5, 2025 – Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met with a delegation from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Friday to discuss the death of a girl in Narasaraopet, who exhibited symptoms of the H5N1 bird flu virus. While H5N1 markers were found in the girl’s samples, the ICMR team clarified that her death was attributed to multiple factors, including consuming undercooked meat, a weakened immune system due to her young age, leptospirosis, and poor sanitation.
Eight ICMR teams surveyed the surrounding areas and found no evidence of a bird flu outbreak. Tests on family members and local residents also came back negative. The ICMR assured the Chief Minister that there is no cause for public alarm. Naidu, however, instructed the Health Department to take preventative measures, and officials confirmed that antiviral drugs are readily available.
