Fri Apr 04 20:20:00 UTC 2025: **Strong 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Papua New Guinea Following String of Global Seismic Activity**

PORT MORESBY, PAPUA NEW GUINEA – A powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Kimbe, Papua New Guinea on Friday, April 4th, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which hit at a depth of 10 kilometers, prompted limited reports of people feeling the tremor. This significant seismic event follows a week of notable earthquake activity around the globe.

The Papua New Guinea earthquake is the latest in a series of tremors, including a 4.0 magnitude quake in California, a 5.5 magnitude quake in Alaska, and a 5.1 magnitude quake, also in Alaska. Smaller quakes were also recorded in Nevada and Tonga in the preceding days.

Most significantly, this recent spate of seismic activity followed a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar (Burma) on March 28th, which tragically resulted in over 2,700 deaths. The Myanmar earthquake, centered near Mandalay, was followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock and a 5.1 magnitude aftershock. In the wake of the disaster, the Myanmar junta issued a rare plea for international aid. Videos circulating online showed widespread panic, including footage of people fleeing a collapsing building in Bangkok, Thailand. The USGS also recorded the depth of the Myanmar earthquake as 10 kilometers.

The USGS continues to monitor seismic activity worldwide.
