Fri Apr 04 17:05:13 UTC 2025: ## Trump Fires NSA Director, Sparking Outrage

**WASHINGTON, April 4, 2025** – President Donald Trump abruptly fired General Timothy Haugh, director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and head of U.S. Cyber Command, along with his deputy Wendy Noble, triggering widespread condemnation from Democrats. The dismissals, confirmed by two officials familiar with the decision, came as the U.S. faces significant cyber threats, most recently highlighted by the massive “Salt Typhoon” Chinese hacking incident.

Senator Mark Warner, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, criticized the move, stating, “At a time when the United States is facing unprecedented cyber threats…how does firing him make Americans any safer?” Representative Jim Himes, ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, echoed these concerns, describing General Haugh as “an honest and forthright leader who followed the law and put national security first.”

The White House and Pentagon have yet to offer an explanation for the firings. While media reports suggest the reason remains unclear, President Trump has previously indicated a preference for officials who align with his views. He stated on Thursday, “We’re always going to let go of people – people we don’t like…”

The acting NSA director is now William Hartmann, and Sheila Thomas is the acting deputy director. Wendy Noble has been reassigned within the Pentagon.

The timing of the firings has drawn further criticism. Senator Warner pointed out the irony of dismissing a nonpartisan leader while failing to address security breaches within the administration, such as the leak of classified information via a commercial messaging app. The NSA, a crucial intelligence agency, and U.S. Cyber Command, responsible for both offensive and defensive cyber operations, are now led by acting directors. The dismissals leave the agencies facing uncertainty as they combat growing cyber threats.
