Fri Apr 04 10:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Goyal Slams “Ice Cream Startups,” Urges Focus on Tech Innovation
**New Delhi, April 4, 2025** – Union Minister Piyush Goyal criticized the burgeoning trend of affluent Indians launching consumer-focused startups, citing the proliferation of ice cream and cookie brands as examples. Speaking at the Startup Mahakumbh 2025, Goyal questioned whether India’s future lies in such ventures or in prioritizing technological advancements like semiconductors and AI.
“I know several billionaires whose children have launched fancy ice cream and cookie brands,” Goyal stated. “While I have no complaints about their success, is this the destiny of India? Are we satisfied with this?” He argued that these businesses, often marketed with terms like “healthy” and “vegan,” are entrepreneurship, not technological innovation deserving of the “startup” label.
Goyal contrasted this trend with India’s progress in the semiconductor industry and AI development, highlighting significant investments in self-reliance in these critical technological sectors. He posed a direct challenge: “Should India focus on making ice cream or semiconductor chips?”
This critique drew a swift response from Aadit Palicha, CEO of quick commerce startup Zepto. Palicha defended the role of consumer internet startups in driving innovation, pointing to Zepto’s significant tax contributions, foreign direct investment attraction, and investment in India’s supply chains as evidence of their positive impact. He urged for continued support for these businesses, arguing that easy comparisons to the deep tech sectors of the US and China overlook their vital contributions to India’s economic growth. The debate highlights a growing tension between the pursuit of consumer-driven startups and the government’s push for high-tech innovation in India.
