**Chennai, India –** Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced plans Thursday to erect a statue of Karl Marx in Chennai, a city with a long history of labor activism. The announcement, made during a session of the state assembly, pays tribute to the influential philosopher and socialist leader, whom Stalin hailed as a visionary thinker and revolutionary. The decision comes shortly before Stalin’s scheduled attendance at the 24th National Congress of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in Madurai.
Stalin highlighted Marx’s profound impact on global history, noting his insightful analysis of India at a time when few others did. He also recalled the 1931 Tamil translation of *The Communist Manifesto* by social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy. The announcement has been met with widespread approval from various political parties, including the CPI-M, Dravidar Kazhagam, and CPI, all of whom praised the Chief Minister’s decision.
In addition to the Marx statue, Stalin revealed plans for a memorial building dedicated to P.K. Mookiah Thevar, a prominent leader of the All India Forward Bloc, in Usilampatti, Madurai district. Stalin lauded Thevar’s political career, his contributions to education within the Thevar community, and his vocal opposition to the Katchatheevu agreement in Parliament. The AIADMK, the principal opposition party, also voiced its support for both announcements.
