**La Paz, Bolivia** – A violent clash between rival gold mining cooperatives in Bolivia has resulted in a deadly dynamite explosion, leaving six people dead and several others missing. The blast, which occurred Thursday at the Yani mining camp, approximately 150 kilometers northwest of La Paz, also damaged houses and left the nearby town of Sorata without power.

According to Jhonny Silva, a representative of the Hijos de Ingenio Mining Cooperative, the explosion stemmed from a long-running dispute with the Senor de Mayo cooperative over access to a gold deposit. The fight involved the use of dynamite, targeting machinery and even a diesel tank. Colonel Gunther Agudo, a local police officer, described the blast as “of great magnitude.” Rescue efforts are ongoing.

The incident highlights the volatile nature of Bolivia’s cooperative mining sector, which emerged as an alternative to state-run and private companies following economic crises in the past. While cooperatives now represent the majority of miners and hold significant political influence, critics point to a lack of worker safeguards and the prevalence of illegal mining activities, leading to environmental damage and deadly conflicts. This latest explosion is just the most recent in a series of violent clashes over access to resources and markets. Past incidents have involved state-owned mining company COMIBOL and even security forces. The ongoing investigation seeks to determine the full extent of the casualties and hold those responsible accountable.
