Kumar, whose real name was Harikrishna Giri Goswami, was born on July 24, 1937, in what is now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. His family moved to Delhi after the partition of India. He adopted the screen name Manoj Kumar, inspired by his idol Dilip Kumar.
