**New Delhi** – The Lok Sabha approved the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur on Thursday, following a resolution moved by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The decision comes after nearly two years of escalating ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. While the government claims the situation is under control with no violence reported in the past four months, concerns remain regarding the restoration of peace and public trust.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, while expressing hope for a return to normalcy, questioned the late-night timing of the Lok Sabha discussion. He highlighted the erosion of public trust in Manipur’s institutions and the ongoing challenges posed by illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Tharoor also criticized the alleged interference of the state government in drug investigations, citing the resignation of prominent police officer Brinda Thounaojam, who accused the Chief Minister of sheltering drug lords. Ms. Thounaojam, a recipient of a gallantry award, returned the award after alleging pressure to release a key accused.
The violence, which began in May 2023, has claimed over 250 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 people. The conflict stems from disputes over land rights, political representation, and the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe status, countered by Kuki demands for a separate administration. Kuki leaders, including militant groups, have intensified their calls for a separate state or union territory, while Meitei leaders refute claims that this demand is recent.
Home Minister Shah, while acknowledging the situation is not entirely satisfactory, asserted that it is under control and dismissed the possibility of a no-confidence motion. The imposition of President’s rule marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to quell the violence and restore stability to the troubled state.
