Thu Apr 03 22:49:38 UTC 2025: ## Government Silent on Reviving NJAC After Collegium System Ruling

**New Delhi, April 4, 2025** – Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal remained tight-lipped on Thursday regarding the government’s intentions to reintroduce a National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Bill. This follows a Rajya Sabha question from BJD member Sasmit Patra regarding the government’s stance on replacing the existing Collegium system.

While Mr. Meghwal provided a detailed explanation of the now-struck-down 2014 NJAC Act, which aimed for a “more broad-based, transparent, accountable appointment mechanism,” he avoided directly addressing the possibility of a new bill. He noted that the Supreme Court declared the 2014 Act unconstitutional in 2015, reinstating the Collegium system.

The issue of the NJAC has resurfaced recently following allegations of cash found in the residence of a Delhi High Court judge. The government’s silence leaves the future of judicial appointments in India uncertain.
