**Chennai, April 4** – K Annamalai, president of the Tamil Nadu BJP, has denied he is seeking re-election, fueling speculation about his imminent replacement. Sources within the BJP suggest that AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami has made Annamalai’s removal a precondition for a renewed alliance ahead of next year’s state assembly elections. Palaniswami reportedly objects to Annamalai’s criticism of AIADMK leaders, a key factor in the parties’ 2023 split.
While Annamalai’s tenure hasn’t yielded significant electoral gains for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, he’s credited with significantly raising the party’s profile in the state. Known for his outspoken criticism of the ruling DMK, including a self-flagellation protest last December, Annamalai remains a prominent figure.
BJP sources indicate Annamalai’s potential removal wouldn’t be a punishment, but rather a strategic move to broaden the party’s reach. A higher role within the party or the central government hasn’t been ruled out, echoing the appointment of his predecessor, L Murugan, as a Union minister after his removal.
Palaniswami’s insistence on Annamalai’s ouster stems from concerns that Annamalai undermined the AIADMK’s position and projected the BJP as the primary opposition. Annamalai’s criticism of several AIADMK leaders further exacerbated tensions. His caste affiliation (Gounder community, the same as Palaniswami) is also a factor, as the BJP may seek to balance caste dynamics for electoral advantage. The AIADMK views Annamalai’s potential chief ministerial ambitions as a direct challenge to Palaniswami.
Alliance talks between the BJP and AIADMK are anticipated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu on April 6th. The announcement of Annamalai’s successor is expected to follow these discussions.
