**Yangon, Myanmar – April 4, 2025** – India has pledged significant support to Myanmar in the long-term reconstruction efforts following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the country on March 28th, killing nearly 3,000 people. Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, announced India’s commitment to closely collaborating with Myanmar in rebuilding infrastructure and cultural landmarks damaged by the quake.
Ambassador Thakur highlighted the extensive damage to iconic sites including the Mahamuni Pagoda, Mandalay Palace, and U Bein Bridge. He noted that the connectivity in the Sagaing region has been severely affected due to collapsed bridges. India’s assistance will focus on a comprehensive rebuilding plan addressing both infrastructure and cultural heritage sites.
This commitment builds upon India’s immediate relief efforts, which have already delivered over 1000 tonnes of aid, including food, medicine, and emergency supplies. Ambassador Thakur praised the swift and cooperative response from Myanmar authorities, highlighting the strong bilateral ties between the two nations. He emphasized that support for India’s aid efforts has been consistent across all regions and political spectrums in Myanmar, despite ongoing internal conflicts.
The ongoing reconstruction will leverage existing India-Myanmar projects, including the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway Project. These initiatives, funded through grants, lines of credit, and capacity building, represent a substantial developmental partnership between the two countries. India’s support extends beyond immediate relief, signaling a long-term commitment to Myanmar’s recovery and rebuilding.
