**Bengaluru, April 4, 2025** – Karnataka’s Medical Education and Skill Development Minister, Sharan Prakash Patil, announced plans to amend the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) Act to improve the university’s administration. Speaking at The Hindu office, Patil revealed ongoing discussions to replace the current Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in the Registrar (Administration) position with a medical officer. He argued that this change would streamline the administrative system and facilitate more effective policy decisions within the medical university.
The proposed amendment follows earlier attempts during Patil’s previous tenure as minister. While a bill was introduced then, it failed to pass. Patil emphasized that the changes are solely aimed at improving administrative efficiency and are not intended to diminish the Governor’s authority.
Further amendments are being considered to the university’s affiliation process for medical colleges, potentially moving away from the current annual renewal system. The minister also highlighted plans to implement new quality parameters for Allied Health Sciences Institutes, including nursing colleges.
