Fri Apr 04 07:34:18 UTC 2025: ## Delhi University to Crack Down on Election Malpractices, VC Defends CUET and “Saffronization” Claims

**New Delhi, April 4, 2025** – Delhi University will implement stricter regulations for upcoming student union elections, aiming to curb malpractices and disruptions to academics, Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh announced today. The university will fully adopt the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, limiting campaign spending to ₹5,000 per candidate, prohibiting printed materials, and banning defacement of public property. Violations could result in disqualification or disciplinary action.

Singh’s announcement follows concerns from students about election-related disruptions and a Delhi High Court ruling criticizing the university’s past failure to fully enforce the Lyngdoh guidelines. He emphasized the need to prioritize academic pursuits, stating, “Many students just want to study, and they should have that right without disturbances.”

The VC also addressed allegations of “saffronization” within the university, dismissing them as unfounded. He asserted that education should instill national pride and prepare students for India’s future development. He defended the use of saffron as a symbol representing sacrifice and national identity.

Furthermore, Singh reiterated the university’s satisfaction with the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), stating that it has enhanced diversity and fairness in admissions and that there are no plans to opt out. He also expressed support for “One Nation, One Election,” suggesting a mechanism for Rajya Sabha governance in case of premature government collapses to minimize electoral disruptions.

Finally, Singh highlighted the university’s progress in improving its infrastructure, faculty recruitment, and research initiatives, noting a significant jump in its QS world ranking. The university aims to break into the top 200, and eventually the top 100, globally.
