Fri Apr 04 11:27:51 UTC 2025: ## China Slaps 34% Tariff on All US Goods in Retaliation

**Beijing, April 4, 2025** – China announced a sweeping 34% tariff on all US imports, effective April 10th, escalating the ongoing trade war with the United States. This retaliatory measure mirrors a similar “reciprocal” tariff recently imposed by US President Donald Trump. The move sent shockwaves through Wall Street, with stocks of companies heavily invested in China experiencing significant losses.

Beyond the tariffs, China also unveiled further punitive actions. The Commerce Ministry announced increased export controls on rare earth minerals crucial for high-tech manufacturing, and added 27 US firms to its sanctions and export control lists. Sixteen of these companies face a ban on the export of dual-use goods, including defense technology firm High Point Aerotechnologies and logistics company Universal Logistics Holding.

President Trump criticized China’s response on social media, claiming China “panicked.” China, however, maintains that the US tariffs violate WTO rules and constitute “unilateral bullying.” The Chinese government has filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization challenging the legality of the US tariffs.

These latest actions build on previous retaliatory measures by China, including tariffs on US coal, LNG, crude oil, agricultural machinery, and cars implemented in February. The escalating trade conflict raises concerns about its potential impact on global economic stability, with the IMF already flagging the US tariffs as a significant risk. The situation prompts questions about whether other nations, including India, should consider adjusting their own tariff policies in response to the escalating US-China trade war.
