**Alappuzha, Kerala, April 2, 2025** – The Union government has approved a ₹93.17 crore project to transform Alappuzha into a “global water wonderland,” injecting significant funds into the district’s tourism sector. The “Alappuzha – A Global Water Wonderland” project, under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, will see upgrades to the beach, canals, and backwaters.

The project, which received administrative and financial sanction on March 26th, encompasses several key areas. ₹24.25 crore will be dedicated to beachfront development, including promenades, parking, seating, lighting, landscaping, event spaces, and improved waste management. Canal-side revitalization, budgeted at ₹37 crore, aims to restore historic canals, creating public spaces while preserving ecological and cultural significance. An international cruise terminal at Punnamada Finishing Point will cost ₹8.5 crore and include parking, a marina, and various amenities. An additional ₹4 crore is earmarked for “soft interventions,” such as cultural integration, community engagement, and digital tourism initiatives.

The first installment of ₹9.31 crore has already been sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Tourism, following the submission of a detailed project report by the State government and a presentation to the Mission Directorate on March 3rd. The entire project is slated for completion by March 31, 2026. This initiative is expected to significantly boost tourism in Alappuzha.
