Wed Apr 02 08:49:04 UTC 2025: ## Retiring Loco Pilot Killed in Fatal Train Collision

**Sahebganj, Jharkhand –** A tragic end to a career marked the death of Gangeswar Mal, an NTPC loco pilot, who was killed in a head-on collision between two goods trains in Jharkhand’s Sahebganj district early Tuesday morning. The accident, which occurred around 3 am near Bhognadih, claimed the lives of both loco pilots and injured four others. Ironically, April 1st was Mal’s last day of work before retirement, and he was looking forward to a celebratory dinner with his family in West Bengal.

Mal, who resided in Jiaganj, Murshidabad district, had promised his family a reunion dinner after his final trip. His daughter recounted how he was waiting at a signal point when his train was struck head-on by another NTPC goods train carrying coal to the Farakka thermal power plant. “Our world came crashing down,” she lamented.

The collision involved two NTPC-operated goods trains traveling on the Lalmatia MGR line, which connects the Kahalgaon and Farakka power plants. Eastern Railway spokesperson Kausik Mitra clarified that the incident occurred on NTPC infrastructure and was not related to Indian Railways. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Kishore Tirkey confirmed the death of both loco pilots.

Mal’s body is being transported back to West Bengal by his family and neighbours. The incident leaves his family grieving the loss of their father and husband just as they were anticipating a joyous retirement celebration. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
