Wed Apr 02 10:48:44 UTC 2025: ## Tribal Youth Dies in Police Custody in Kerala; Crime Branch Investigation Ordered
**Kozhikode, Kerala – April 2, 2025** – An 18-year-old tribal youth, Gokul, died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody at the Kalpetta police station in Wayanad district, Kerala. His death has sparked outrage and prompted a Crime Branch investigation.
Gokul was taken into custody on March 31st along with a missing minor tribal girl. Police received a tip-off from Kozhikode City and a squad from Wayanad apprehended the pair. According to police, Gokul was found dead inside the police station toilet around 8 a.m. on April 1st. Authorities stated that officers had to break down the door after Gokul, who had asked to use the restroom, failed to emerge after 30 minutes.
Gokul’s family alleges foul play, claiming suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. Tribal welfare organizations have also voiced concerns and called for a thorough investigation. While police claim no case was registered against Gokul, his parents were reportedly informed of his suspected involvement in the missing girl case. The police stated that Gokul was not presented in court on March 31st due to the late hour of their arrival at the Kalpetta station after retrieving the pair from Kozhikode. The missing girl has been placed in a government shelter home.
The Indian National Congress has condemned the incident, accusing the police of illegally detaining Gokul beyond the permissible time. Former Minister P.K. Jayalakshmi demanded a high-level probe and the exposure of any police officers involved. The Crime Branch investigation is now underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Gokul’s death.
