**New Delhi, April 2, 2025** – Justice Gerard Hogan, a judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland, visited the Supreme Court of India today. Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna welcomed Justice Hogan, highlighting his extensive legal background, including previous roles at the Court of Appeals and as Advocate General for the European Court of Appeals. Justice Khanna noted Justice Hogan’s authorship of significant judgments on the Right to Life and safe harbour principles.
The CJI emphasized the similarities between the Indian and Irish constitutions, particularly concerning directive principles of state policy and the concept of a Union of States. He mentioned Justice Hogan’s interest in Indian jurisprudence and mediation. Justice Hogan, who has served on the Irish Supreme Court since October 2021, observed court proceedings from the visitors’ gallery. He is scheduled to visit the international arbitration centre at the Delhi High Court later today.
