**Bengaluru, April 2, 2025** – A major security lapse at Bengaluru Central Prison has been exposed, revealing an inmate used smuggled cellphones to orchestrate a murder using WhatsApp and Instagram. Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (Northern Range), T.P. Shesha, revealed the breach in a letter to the Director General of Prisons.
The letter, dated March 26, states that inmate Manoj, also known as Kencha, coordinated with the killers of Jayaram K., a history-sheeter, who was murdered on March 4. Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder. The DIG claims he was informed of the failure of the prison’s mobile jammers and security violations by the Chief Judicial Magistrate on March 25. The letter also alleges that financial transactions related to the crime took place within the prison.
Despite the installation of 19 jammers and a Tower-Harmonics Call Blocking System, the inmate managed to access the internet. Residents within a 3km radius of the prison have reported disruption to their mobile networks due to the jammers, creating a puzzling contrast. Following complaints, the prison department instructed Telecommunication Consultants India Limited (TCIL) in March to recalibrate the jammers, but this is yet to be completed.
A senior prison official confirmed that an investigation has been launched following the letter reaching the Director General of Prisons’ office. The incident raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures at the prison and the ability of inmates to communicate with the outside world despite jamming technology.
