**Hyderabad, April 2, 2025** – The proposed auction of 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli, Hyderabad, has ignited a fierce debate. While the Telangana government claims the sale will generate ₹50,000 crore in investment and 5 lakh jobs, environmentalists and University of Hyderabad students are protesting, citing concerns over the loss of green space and wildlife habitat.
A government note circulated Tuesday counters claims that the land is forested, stating it’s classified as “Kancha Poramboke” (grazing/waste land) in revenue records. The government assures that historical rock formations, such as the Mushroom Rock, will be preserved within a planned park, and an environmental management plan is in place.
University of Hyderabad students are actively opposing the auction, demanding the land be transferred to the university instead. The controversy highlights the tension between economic development and environmental protection in rapidly growing urban areas.
