Wed Apr 02 07:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Parliament in Uproar as Akhilesh Yadav and Amit Shah Spar Over BJP Presidency and Wakf Bill

**New Delhi:** The Lok Sabha erupted in laughter during a debate on the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, when Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav took a dig at the BJP’s prolonged search for a new national president. Yadav quipped that the party, which considers itself the world’s largest, had yet to choose a successor.

This prompted a witty retort from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Shah, in a lighthearted response, contrasted the BJP’s process of electing a president, involving millions of party workers, with what he described as the “familial” selection process within the SP. He jokingly predicted Yadav’s continued leadership of the SP for the next 25 years, causing further amusement in the house.

The lighthearted exchange overshadowed a more serious debate on the Wakf Bill itself. The bill, which was presented for discussion and passage, faced opposition from RSP’s NK Premachandran who raised concerns about the amendments added by the joint parliamentary committee, alleging they exceeded its mandate.

However, Home Minister Shah defended the process, highlighting the committee’s democratic deliberations and contrasting them with what he characterized as the merely “rubber-stamping” approach of parliamentary committees during the Congress-led governments. He emphasized the BJP government’s acceptance of the committee’s suggestions, highlighting the bill’s improvements based on their recommendations. Shah’s remarks sparked further debate about the role and function of parliamentary committees in the legislative process.
