Tue Apr 01 11:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Iceland Volcano Erupts Near Grindavík, Triggering Further Evacuations
**Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland –** A volcanic eruption has begun on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, forcing further evacuations near the town of Grindavík. The eruption, which started around 09:45 local time (10:45 BST), quickly spread to a 700-meter-wide fissure, prompting officials to urge any remaining residents to leave immediately.
The eruption followed hundreds of earthquakes in the Sundhnúks Crater Row area. While Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa had already been evacuated preemptively, roads remain closed. Air travel, however, is currently unaffected. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) reports that the fissure has extended, with a new crack opening.
This is the latest in a series of eruptions on the peninsula since 2021, a period of volcanic activity unprecedented in the last 800 years. The current magma tunnel, stretching 11 kilometers, is the longest measured since November 2023. The IMO warns that prevailing winds will carry volcanic gas northeast towards the capital area.
Most of Grindavík’s 4,000 residents were already evacuated in November 2023, ahead of previous eruptions. Only around 40 houses were still occupied prior to this latest event. The IMO notes that the Reykjanes Peninsula’s current activity could continue for decades, mirroring historical patterns. Iceland, situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has 33 active volcanic systems.
