**Nagpur, India –** A senior BJP leader has dismissed the ongoing controversy surrounding the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb as unnecessary, urging an end to the weeks-long feud that has pitted the BJP against the opposition. Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi, a leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stated today that Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, should remain. He cited Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s construction of Afzal Khan’s grave as an example of India’s historical inclusiveness and generosity.
The controversy was initially ignited by Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi’s praise of Aurangzeb, escalating after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis supported calls for the tomb’s removal, while acknowledging legal obstacles due to its protected status under the Archaeological Society of India. The debate culminated in violence in Nagpur on March 17th, resulting in property damage, vehicle arson, and injuries to approximately 40 people, including 14 police officers.
Opposition leaders have criticized the handling of the situation. Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray questioned the state government’s response, highlighting Nagpur’s history and the presence of the RSS headquarters in the city. Congress leader Pawan Khera attributed the violence to attempts to manipulate history for political gain.
The RSS’s own internal stance appears conflicted. While Joshi advocated for the tomb’s preservation, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale previously praised Aurangzeb’s brother, Dara Shikoh, for his respect of Indian culture. This internal discrepancy adds another layer to the complex political landscape surrounding the Aurangzeb tomb controversy.
