Tue Apr 01 08:01:35 UTC 2025: ## Supreme Court Rejects Plea Against Sabarmati Ashram Redevelopment
**New Delhi, April 1, 2025** – The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea filed by Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, challenging the redevelopment of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The court cited a two-year delay in filing the petition and stated that concerns about the project altering the ashram’s topography were insufficient grounds for intervention.
Mr. Gandhi’s plea argued that the redevelopment plan, which involves preserving approximately 40 buildings while demolishing or rebuilding around 200 others, would significantly impact the historical site. He had originally filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Gujarat High Court in 2022, seeking the redevelopment to be overseen by the National Gandhi Smarak Nidhi. The Gujarat High Court dismissed the plea after the Gujarat government assured that the main five-acre area of the ashram would remain untouched. The Supreme Court upheld this decision, stating that the government’s assurances couldn’t be challenged based on mere apprehension. The Sabarmati Ashram, established in 1917, is a significant historical landmark.
