Tue Apr 01 11:46:00 UTC 2025: ## Nigerian Boxer Dies After Collapsing in Ghana Ring

**Accra, Ghana/Lagos, Nigeria** – Former Nigerian and West African light-heavyweight champion, Gabriel Oluwasegun Success Olanrewaju, 40, died Saturday after collapsing in the ring during a boxing match in Ghana. The tragic incident occurred during the third round of the fight, with Olanrewaju leaning against the ropes without receiving a blow from his opponent.

According to the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), the referee immediately stopped the bout and medical personnel attempted resuscitation. Olanrewaju was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes later.

While the GBA confirmed Olanrewaju had received medical clearance from the Nigeria Boxing Board Control (NBBC), the NBBC subsequently denied authorizing the specific fight in which he died. Reports indicate that Olanrewaju, initially scheduled to fight on Friday but deemed overweight, remained in Ghana due to financial constraints after failing to make weight. He was reportedly involved in a last-minute bout arranged by a matchmaker.

NBBC secretary Remi Aboderin expressed the federation’s grief and pledged support for Olanrewaju’s family, describing him as a “ring warrior.” A former coach, Babatunde Ojo, also lamented the loss, stating he had advised Olanrewaju against taking the short-notice fight. The incident has prompted questions regarding the oversight of boxing matches and the welfare of athletes. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Olanrewaju’s death are expected.
