Tue Apr 01 06:09:29 UTC 2025: ## Astronaut Sunita Williams Raves About India’s Beauty From Space

**Houston, TX** – Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams has described her awe-inspiring view of India from the International Space Station (ISS), echoing the sentiments of Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut, four decades prior. During a recent interview, Williams, who spent 286 days aboard the ISS, described the Indian landscape as “amazing,” highlighting the diverse colours of the terrain from the Himalayas to the fishing fleets off the coast of Gujarat and Mumbai. She particularly noted the striking network of lights visible at night across the country.

Williams, who often speaks about her Indian heritage, partnered with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore on capturing stunning images of the Himalayas during their time on the ISS. The pair’s mission, initially launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner, faced propulsion issues, resulting in an uncrewed return and an extended nine-month stay on the ISS before returning to Earth on March 19th via SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.

The astronaut expressed excitement for NASA’s upcoming Axiom mission, which includes Indian Air Force test pilot and ISRO astronaut Subhanshu Shukla. Williams stated her hope to collaborate with the Indian space program, sharing her experiences to support India’s growing presence in space exploration. She also plans a future trip to India, inviting Wilmore to join her for a taste of “spicy food.”
