Tue Apr 01 01:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Bueckers’ Record-Setting Performance Sends UConn to Elite Eight
**SPOKANE, Wash. —** Paige Bueckers etched her name in UConn history, leading the Huskies to a dominant 82-59 victory over Oklahoma in the Sweet 16 with a record-breaking 40-point performance. The win sends UConn to their 29th Elite Eight appearance.
Bueckers, the projected No. 1 pick in the upcoming WNBA draft, became the first UConn player ever to score 40 points in an NCAA tournament game. Her 29-point second-half explosion single-handedly outscored the Sooners in the final two quarters. She shot an impressive 16-for-27 from the field, showcasing her efficient scoring ability both inside and beyond the arc. A remarkable 19-point scoring streak to start the fourth quarter effectively sealed the victory for the Huskies.
While UConn trailed 36-32 at halftime, coach Geno Auriemma challenged Bueckers’ defensive effort. His words sparked an incredible turnaround. The Huskies clamped down defensively in the second half, holding Oklahoma to just 23 points and forcing 23 turnovers. This stifling defense, combined with Bueckers’ offensive onslaught, allowed UConn to overcome their halftime deficit.
The win wasn’t solely a Bueckers show; UConn’s supporting cast contributed significantly. Strong defensive efforts from the guards limited Oklahoma’s penetration, while freshmen Sarah Strong and Jana El Alfy dominated the boards with a combined 20 rebounds. Sophomore Ashlynn Shade provided crucial bench scoring.
Auriemma emphasized the team effort, highlighting the importance of each player fulfilling their roles to complement Bueckers’ star power. Bueckers herself expressed her joy in continuing the season with her team, emphasizing their shared love for the game and the program. UConn will face USC in the Elite Eight on Monday.
