Tue Apr 01 05:20:55 UTC 2025: ## AI Speeds Damage Assessment After Myanmar Earthquake

**REDMOND, WASHINGTON – April 1, 2025** – Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab has leveraged satellite imagery and artificial intelligence to rapidly assess the damage caused by Friday’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar. Initial attempts were hampered by cloud cover, but images eventually captured by Planet Labs’ satellites were processed by a custom-built AI model. The analysis revealed 515 buildings in Mandalay with 80-100% damage and another 1,524 with 20-80% damage. This information, while preliminary and requiring on-the-ground verification, has been shared with aid organizations like the Red Cross to aid relief efforts. Microsoft emphasized the challenge of adapting AI to the diverse nature of natural disasters, highlighting the need for customized models to effectively analyze satellite imagery in varied situations. Planet Labs satellites have since photographed over a dozen locations across Myanmar and Thailand affected by the quake.
