**Beijing, March 31, 2025** – China’s state-run Xinhua news agency announced the discovery of a significant oilfield in the eastern South China Sea. The Huizhou 19-6 oilfield, located approximately 170 kilometers from Shenzhen, boasts proven reserves exceeding 100 million tonnes.
Test drilling at the site has already yielded a daily production of 413 barrels of crude oil and 68,000 cubic meters of natural gas. This discovery comes despite the South China Sea’s largely unexplored status due to ongoing territorial disputes. While China claims almost all of the South China Sea, its claim is contested by several nations including the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Brunei. The US Energy Information Administration notes that most discovered oil and gas resources in the region are located in uncontested areas. The new discovery is expected to have significant implications for China’s energy security.
