Sun Mar 30 12:31:54 UTC 2025: ## Iran Rejects Direct Talks with US on Nuclear Program
**Dubai, March 30, 2025** – Iran has rejected direct negotiations with the United States regarding its nuclear program, President Masoud Pezeshkian announced Sunday. This follows a letter from US President Donald Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. While Iran leaves the door open for indirect talks facilitated by Oman, progress remains stalled since the US withdrawal from the 2018 nuclear deal.
Tensions in the region have escalated significantly since then, with attacks at sea and on land, the Israel-Hamas war, and recent US airstrikes targeting Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The possibility of military action against Iran’s nuclear program remains a serious concern.
President Pezeshkian cited broken promises as the reason for Iran’s reluctance to engage directly with the US, demanding a demonstration of trust. The White House has yet to respond to the announcement.
This decision marks a significant shift in Iran’s stance since Pezeshkian’s election six months ago. While he initially indicated openness to talks, Ayatollah Khamenei’s condemnation of negotiations with the Trump administration in February led to a hardening of Iran’s position.
Conflicting signals have emanated from Iran in recent weeks. While Friday’s Quds Day demonstrations focused solely on anti-Israel sentiment, omitting the usual anti-American rhetoric, Press TV, the English-language arm of Iranian state television, published an article last week listing potential targets for attack, including US bases in the Middle East. Iranian officials have also warned of severe consequences should the US violate Iranian sovereignty.
Trump’s letter, delivered on March 12th, reportedly urged negotiations to avoid military intervention. This echoes Trump’s previous attempts at communication with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, which yielded face-to-face meetings but no significant agreements. Previous attempts to communicate through intermediaries have also been met with resistance.
The escalating situation is fueled by concerns that Iran’s uranium enrichment is nearing weapons-grade levels. While Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, a recent UN report indicates accelerated production of near weapons-grade uranium. The assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020 and alleged Iranian plots against Trump further complicate relations. Both the US and Israel have repeatedly stated they will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.
