**JAMSHEDPUR, JHARKHAND –** Anuj Kanaujia, a key shooter for the Mukhtar Ansari gang and wanted for multiple murders and extortion, was killed in a police encounter in Jamshedpur on Saturday, March 29, 2025. The encounter, involving a joint team from the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and Jharkhand Police, resulted in a heavy exchange of fire. Kanaujia, 42, carried a ₹2.5 lakh reward on his head.
According to Additional Director General of Police (UP STF), Amitabh Yash, two pistols were recovered from Kanaujia’s possession. A DSP from the STF sustained a firearm injury during the encounter.
Kanaujia, a resident of Mau district, Uttar Pradesh, had a criminal history dating back to 2003, with 23 cases registered against him across multiple districts. He rose to prominence under the patronage of Mukhtar Ansari, whose first death anniversary coincided with Kanaujia’s death. Kanaujia’s criminal activities included murder, attempted murder, and extortion from businessmen in Mau and surrounding areas. His wife and a relative were arrested two years ago for assisting in his extortion schemes. He had been evading capture since then, frequently changing locations across Bihar and Jharkhand.
The police stated that Kanaujia initially became involved in crime due to personal disputes in his village, but Ansari’s protection propelled his criminal career. The encounter marks a significant blow to the Ansari gang’s operations.
