**Thiruvananthapuram, March 29, 2025** – Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in Kerala will escalate their ongoing protest against the state government on Monday, marking the 50th day of their agitation. The ASHAs, who have been demanding better remuneration, will publicly cut their hair as a symbolic act of protest. This follows an indefinite hunger strike, now in its tenth day, and a continuous demonstration outside the Secretariat.
The hair-cutting protest mirrors similar actions globally, used to signify anger, rebellion, mourning, or solidarity with women’s rights. The ASHA’s protest is viewed as both a women’s rights and workers’ rights movement. Despite drawing national attention, the Kerala government remains unresponsive to the health workers’ demands for increased compensation. The protest shows no signs of ending.
