**The Hague/Manila, Netherlands/Philippines** – Thousands of supporters rallied across the Philippines and outside the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague on Friday to celebrate the 80th birthday of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and protest his detention on charges of crimes against humanity.
Over 200 rallies were held nationwide, with the largest gathering in Davao City, Duterte’s hometown, featuring a candlelit vigil. Supporters expressed their unwavering loyalty and sorrow over his imprisonment, emphasizing their belief in his innocence. In Manila, police intercepted a motorcycle convoy attempting to reach the presidential palace, carrying banners demanding Duterte’s return.
In The Hague, hundreds gathered outside the detention center, playing music and chanting for his release. Duterte’s daughter and Philippine Vice President, Sara Duterte, who has been in The Hague since his arrest on March 11th, expressed gratitude for the widespread support.
Duterte’s lead defense lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, confirmed that the former president was deeply moved by the demonstrations and is looking forward to future birthdays celebrated with his supporters. The ICC has scheduled a court session for September 23rd to confirm the charges, which allege a crime against humanity stemming from Duterte’s controversial war on drugs, a campaign that human rights groups estimate resulted in the deaths of up to 30,000 people. The prosecution has presented 181 pieces of evidence. Duterte will remain in detention until his next court appearance.
