Thu Mar 27 07:43:03 UTC 2025: **South Korea Battles Worst-Ever Wildfires; 28 Dead, Thousands Evacuated**

ANDONG, South Korea (March 28, 2025) – South Korea is battling its worst wildfires in history, with the death toll rising to 28 and over 37,800 people forced to evacuate their homes. The blazes, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, have ravaged southeastern regions since March 21st, destroying thousands of structures and vehicles, including historic buildings.

The fires have consumed 38,665 hectares of land, a record for the country. Authorities suspect human error, such as grass clearing and welding sparks, ignited several of the fires. Among the victims are a helicopter pilot who crashed while fighting the flames, and four firefighters. Many civilian casualties are elderly individuals who struggled to evacuate.

Despite the mobilization of thousands of personnel, dozens of helicopters, and extensive firefighting equipment, gusty winds continue to hinder efforts. While rain is forecast, the anticipated minimal amount is unlikely to significantly quell the fires, according to the Korea Forest Service chief, Lim Sang-seop.

Deputy head of the government’s disaster response center, Lee Han-kyung, linked the wildfires to the worsening climate crisis. The fires have caused significant damage to historical sites, including the partial destruction of the Gounsa temple complex, which lost two state-designated treasures. The Korea Forest Service has issued its highest wildfire warning, implementing strict forest access restrictions and suspending military live-fire exercises. Efforts continue, with over 9,000 personnel and 120 helicopters deployed to combat the widespread devastation.
