**Naypyidaw, Myanmar** – A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and surrounding regions this morning, causing widespread devastation and a significant loss of life. The tremor, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock, resulted in the collapse of a newly built, 1000-bed hospital in the capital, Naypyidaw, raising fears of high casualty numbers among patients and staff.

The earthquake also caused significant damage across Myanmar, including the collapse of numerous buildings and old bridges. At least 25 deaths have been reported so far, with 20 fatalities in Mandalay due to a collapsed mosque and 5 more in Taungoo from a destroyed rehabilitation center. Two deaths were reported in Bangkok, Thailand, where a 30-story building under construction for government offices partially collapsed, trapping at least 43 people. Bangkok’s metro service was temporarily suspended after the initial tremors to prevent further incidents. Shaking was also felt in neighboring countries including Thailand, China, India, and Vietnam. A 4.0 magnitude aftershock was reported in Meghalaya, India, and a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh.
