Wed Mar 26 17:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Russell Benched Despite Stellar Bowling Record: KKR’s Tactical Decision Puzzles Fans

**Guwahati, India** – Andre Russell, a prolific bowler with 19 wickets in IPL 2024, surprisingly sat out the bowling attack for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a second consecutive match in IPL 2025. Despite KKR restricting Rajasthan Royals to 151/9 on Wednesday, Russell didn’t bowl a single over. This follows his absence in KKR’s opening match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane confirmed that Russell is fully fit, attributing his exclusion to the team’s bowling depth. “He is absolutely fit,” Rahane stated. “You are not going to use all the weapons in one game. We have five frontline bowlers. They are wicket takers.”

This strategic decision raises eyebrows given Russell’s impressive IPL 2024 performance, where he shared the team’s top wicket-taking honors with Harshit Rana (19 wickets each), trailing only Varun Chakravarthy (21 wickets). With a career IPL record of 115 wickets in 128 matches, Russell’s exclusion appears to be purely tactical rather than injury-related.

The match saw Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy, and Moeen Ali each claiming two wickets, while Spencer Johnson took one. At the time of reporting, KKR were comfortably positioned at 36/0 in their chase.

The decision comes after KKR won their third IPL title in 2024 and subsequently underwent changes, including the release of title-winning captain Shreyas Iyer and the acquisition of Rahane. While the tactical reasoning behind resting Russell remains a talking point, KKR’s current bowling lineup is proving effective.
