Thu Mar 27 04:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Hulu Series Reignites Debate in “Curious Case” of Natalia Grace

**Indianapolis, IN** – A new Hulu series, “Good American Family,” and a companion Investigation Discovery docuseries are bringing renewed attention to the controversial case of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian woman adopted by an Indiana couple who later claimed she was an adult posing as a child.

The Barnetts, Kristine and Michael, adopted Natalia in 2010. They alleged that Natalia, who has a rare form of dwarfism, exhibited concerning behavior, including alleged attempts to poison Kristine, placing thumbtacks on the stairs, and hiding knives. In 2012, they petitioned the court to legally change Natalia’s age to 22, subsequently moving her out and relocating to Canada. Michael Barnett claimed doctors warned them that Natalia was a sociopath and a danger to their family.

However, Natalia’s account, detailed in the ID docuseries, alleges abuse at the hands of Kristine Barnett. A recent blood test revealed Natalia’s age to be approximately 22 at the time of testing, contradicting the Barnetts’ claims and supporting Natalia’s assertion that she was a child when adopted. Dental and endocrinological evaluations from around the time of her adoption also indicated she was around nine years old.

The Barnetts faced charges of neglect, though the charges against Kristine were dropped, and Michael was found not guilty of some counts. The legal change to Natalia’s age, initially granting the Barnetts’ petition, has since been reversed, restoring her birth year to 2003.

Natalia’s subsequent experiences involved living with the Mans family, where she alleges further abuse, before finding a more stable environment with the DePaul family. While not formally adopted, Natalia now describes her life as peaceful, expressing gratitude for escaping the past traumas. She reflects on her journey, considering herself fortunate to be alive and thriving despite the challenges faced due to her dwarfism and the tumultuous legal and personal battles. The conflicting accounts presented in the Hulu series and ID docuseries highlight the complexities and lingering questions surrounding this extraordinary case.
