Karaikal, India (March 27, 2025) – Recent measures by the Karaikal district administration to curb pig damage to agricultural fields have ignited tensions with traditional swineherds, primarily from the Kattunayakkar and Malai Kuravar communities. Farmers, like P. Varatharajan, who lost half his paddy crop to foraging pigs, have long complained about significant harvest losses. The administration’s response, including fines, pig seizures, and police complaints against those allowing pigs to roam freely, has been met with resistance.
While the administration defends its actions citing the need for regulation, especially given the recent increase in commercial pig farming, swineherds argue they lack the resources for proper fencing. P. Ravi, Vice-President of the Karaikal Swineherds Association, appealed for leniency, suggesting fines instead of seizures, noting the community’s impoverished state and reliance on pig rearing for survival. J. Suriya of the Scheduled Castes and Tribal Welfare Federation criticized the administration’s approach, calling for support and access to loans for fencing instead of seizing the swineherds’ livelihoods. The Animal Husbandry department acknowledges that many unregistered swineherds are hesitant to register due to a lack of infrastructure. The conflict highlights the complex interplay between agricultural needs, community livelihoods, and effective regulatory measures in the region.
