SAMBHAL, UTTAR PRADESH (March 27, 2025) – Authorities in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, have prohibited large gatherings for namaz on rooftops during the upcoming Alvida prayers, citing safety concerns, but emphasized that traditional namaz offerings within mosques and Eidgahs remain unrestricted. The announcement follows the November 24th violence in Kot Garvi locality, which resulted in four deaths and several injuries.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shreesh Chandra stated that while namaz is permitted in its traditional manner, rooftop congregations are banned to prevent accidents. Offering prayers on roads is also prohibited due to safety and traffic concerns. Mosques with small loudspeakers can continue their usual practices.
The clarification comes in response to inquiries from the public and amidst reports that Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rahman Barq plans to challenge the regulations in the Allahabad High Court. ASP Chandra reiterated that the restrictions are solely for safety and do not impede traditional prayer practices. Increased police deployment is planned for Alvida prayers to ensure a peaceful observance.
