**CHENNAI, March 26, 2025** – The expansion of Coimbatore International Airport is finally underway after the Tamil Nadu government handed over acquired land for the project, Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa announced in the Assembly on Tuesday. The tender for construction work has been floated.

Mr. Rajaa’s statement addressed concerns raised by AIADMK MLA S.P. Velumani regarding delays. While the expansion was first proposed in 2010, Mr. Rajaa highlighted that the previous AIADMK government only allocated ₹572 crore between 2018 and 2021, significantly less than the estimated ₹2,088 crore cost. In contrast, he stated that the current DMK government, within a year of taking office in 2021, allocated ₹1,185 crore, bringing the total allocation to ₹1,515 crore.

Electricity Minister V. Senthilbalaji confirmed that land acquisition is complete and has been transferred to the relevant authorities. The expansion is expected to significantly boost the region’s industrial profile, attracting more IT companies, as noted by Mr. Velumani.
